The main satellite operator in Japan, Sky Perfect JSAT Corporation, has agreed with Airbus to build the Superbird-9 satellite. This represents a historic moment for both Europe and Asia, as it is the first time that a Japanese operator has requested Europe to manufacture a satellite.
Superbird-9 will be a fully digital orbit reconfigurable telecommunications satellite that will focus on conducting ku-band broadband and broadcast missions with a special focus on Japan and East Asia.
In addition, it will bring day-to-day flexibility to Sky Perfect JSTA fleet, allowing payload missions to be configured, tailored and matched to perfectly fit the needs of the end user.
Superbird-9 is expected to begin service in 2024 and play an important role in providing advance communications service as well as developing new space business.
